THE CHALLENGE
The Data Makes The Difference platform revolutionizes the way caregivers and educators support learners with special needs, including autism and language delays.
The goal was to move the company’s core VB-MAPP App from an aging technical platform to modern technology and offer the criterion-referenced assessment and curriculum guide through a new, user-friendly interface.
To do this, I’d need to become an expert on not just the assessment component, but the educational, and student management platforms.
THE SOLUTION
The DMTD universe starts with a flexible assessment that’s administered by special needs education professionals. Using the results from the assessment, a student curriculum is developed and through subsequent assessments, progress can be measured.
Knowing that you can’t make anything simple if you don’t understand it yourself, I used my own version of the app to first take the assessment, then deliver it to mock participants.
Understanding how the assessments were administered and used was critical in making updates to the user experience.
With a deep understanding of the end-to-end product universe, I delivered an information architecture and key screens throughout the assessment and training experiences.
Highly reusable and interactive components, including entry fields, iconography, links, labels, content containers, navigation, alerts, messaging, and buttons, were the core deliverables.

In agency and freelance design, nearly every user is unique. The work for Data Makes The Difference was no exception. I started with a administrator account for the existing experience to become fluent with how several interworking audiences use the apps.
This project would include a complete re-platforming onto Apple’s iOS Patterns, so I took the time to engage with Apple and become exceptionally well-versed in a new set of patterns that had just been released.

Learners, Caregivers, Education Professionals, Administrators were all unique audiences with different needs; we kept it organized with a comprehensive organization of user journeys.
In addition to the SaaS element, I created a digital paper version of the same assessment.
