Pioneering Online Construction Equipment Rentals

UNITED RENTALS

MY ROLE
I owned Experience Design for this project.

THE CHALLENGE

In 2015, the equipment rental industry exceeded $40 billion, yet online transactions contributed a mere $0 to this massive revenue. United Rentals, the industry giant, tackled the challenge of digitizing its operations.

Our mission was to create a responsive B2B/B2C platform that not only transformed how businesses and DIYers discover and schedule construction equipment rentals but also set a new standard for online transactions in the industry.

THE SOLUTION

At the heart of our solution was a deep understanding of the end users and the intricacies of their work. We conducted exhaustive research, delving into the world of construction equipment catalogs to understand the critical details that users valued.

Collaborating closely with United Rentals' development and operations teams, we engineered a user-centric platform.

This platform empowered consumers to seamlessly explore equipment details, prioritize information according to their needs, and initiate a rental journey with confidence. Our design philosophy focused on providing the right details at the right time, ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience from search to pickup.

Defining the User Journey:

Our approach to this project involved meticulously mapping out the user journey.

From the initial search for equipment to the final step of payment, we crafted a seamless and intuitive flow.

Understanding the unique needs of consumers, we identified key touchpoints, minimizing friction and optimizing the entire rental process.

Availability of Product Details:

Recognizing that users prioritize certain information, such as pricing, before committing to purchases, we strategically structured the experience to accommodate the availability of technical product data.

Users could access essential details, including pricing, upfront. This transparent approach not only met user expectations but also fostered trust in the online rental process.

Optimized Information Architecture:

Central to the success of the platform was our meticulous attention to information architecture.

We fine-tuned the structure to ensure that users received important details at each stage of the rental process. Whether it was equipment specifications, pricing, or delivery timelines, our architecture prioritized clarity and relevance.

This approach not only enhanced the overall user experience but also contributed to increased user confidence in utilizing the online platform for construction equipment rentals.
